Arcata California Life

Arcata California is a small laid back, friendly community with just under 20,000 residents. Fresh clean air and the fantastic landscape of Northern California redwoods and ocean make it an excellent place to live. Arcata enjoys a year round mild climate with low humidity. Average highs in the summer are around 70, lows in the winter around 38 degrees and the majority of the annual rainfall takes place during the winter months.

Excellence in Education
Arcata school district boasts an excellent educational program and test scores well above the national average. Ninety-seven percent of students from the district attend college after graduation. Humboldt State University, a nationally known school for its environmental and natural resource management courses, is located here. It is one of the top 10 colleges in the nation.

Town Central
Shops and restaurants surround Arcata Plaza, the historic central square of the community. A statue of President McKinley adorns the center of the plaza where many festivals take place throughout the year.

Nature's Wonderland
The Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary is a great place for picnics, hiking, birdwatching, fishing and much more. Redwood Park and the Arcata Community Forest covers 600 acres and nearly 10 miles of hiking, biking and walking trails. You can also find playgrounds, basketball courts and more.

The town has over 25 neighborhood parks. Mad River Beach County Park is a resting and feeding spot for harbor seals and sea lions. Clam Beach County Park is a popular park for camping, hiking, fishing, swimming and just plain beachcombing.

The Lanphere Dunes Preserve on the west side of town offers guided tours of undisturbed dunes some reaching over 80 feet. These white sandy, windswept beaches and dunes are some of the best on the north coast. The Friends of the Dunes organization promotes the conservation of natural dune environments and sponsors events such as the Sand Sculpture Festival.

For Sports Enthusiasts
The Ballpark is home of the Humboldt Crabs, a semipro baseball team and one of the top-rated teams in the country.

The Skate Park is free and open to the public for in-line skaters and skateboards.
Excellent and challenging golf courses are nearby for all golfers, and if your sport is the water, there are many rafting and kayaking areas in and around town.

Fun things To Do
There are a wealth of fun things to do and see and many annual events that include the North County Fair held every September. Handcrafted wares, ethnic foods and live music are some of the highlights of this fair. Another event is the Arcata Kinetic Sculpture Race held every Memorial Day weekend. Thousands come to watch these racers and the machines they build to participate in the people power race.

Museums
The Phillip's House Museum one of the oldest buildings in town is open on Sunday's for tours. The Railroad Museum located in Jacoby's Storehouse retells the story of the days when the town was supplied by rail.
